# EML Archiver (Base Capability) (FTR-39, version 1.0)

> Generated from library record FTR-39 version 1.0, publish 20261102a. Review status: unreviewed. The complete specification is in references/spec.md and is the authority; this file is the operating procedure drawn from it.

## What this does

Retrieve email as byte-authentic .eml files (Office 365 Graph API, scripted, or manual browser reconciliation fallback) and file into a permanent, labeled, chronological archive with sidecars and a manifest; ships with a downloadable toolkit (scripts + reconciliation HTML example)

## When to use this skill

- A person asks to install, apply or update "EML Archiver (Base Capability)" (FTR-39) in a project.
- A project's agent instructions list eml-archiver as installed and the task touches what it covers.
- No other feature is required first.
- Works better with, if installed: FTR-36 (skill excel-tracker-base-capability).
- Required by: FTR-40 (skill email-topic-discovery).

## Install procedure

Steps run in order. Assess comes first, every question in the Ask step is answered by the person before anything is written, and every write merges additively into the existing project files (read the file first, update an existing section in place, never overwrite).

### Assess first
- Confirm which retrieval method applies: is the target mailbox Microsoft 365 / Exchange Online (Method A, scripted, preferred), or does it need the manual browser fallback (Method B)?
- For Method A: confirm the person can complete a one-time device-code sign-in themselves — Claude never sees or enters a password.
- Read `admin\AGENT_INSTRUCTIONS.md` for any existing archive naming convention to reuse rather than inventing a new one.

### Ask, only if needed
- Confirm the output folder name (matter or scope name) before the first run, since it becomes the top-level folder for the EML/Sidecars/Manifest set.
- If the mailbox provider is neither O365 nor easily done by hand (e.g. a generic IMAP host), say plainly that this isn't built yet (Method C, see below) rather than guessing at one.

### Write

The full Write payload is in references/write-payload.md. It is applied exactly as written, with the merge rule above.

### Confirm
Confirm: EML Archiver (Base Capability) is installed — Method A (Office 365 Graph API) and Method B (manual reconciliation fallback) are both documented, the toolkit scripts and HTML example are unzipped into the project's tooling location, and the gotchas list is on file for anyone rebuilding this. Want to install another, or is that everything for now?
## Other sections in the specification

These are in references/spec.md.
